Left my mark on BHSU History!

1) What is so special about the Hike to the H?

The hike to the H is special because it 1955 students asked it to be built in honor of their school. They would hike to the H and repaint it so that it was visible from Spearfish. Several years later, access to the H was restricted after a few bad incidences. About ten years ago, COLP was given permission to recreate the restoration hike and has now been leading ever since. This marks the 61st year of the H.

2) What went into planning the event?

Much of the planning was done by COLP and transportation was arranged by Erica Whitaker in the Student Leadership and Engagement Center. Jane Kluge, Dean of Students worked with facility services to arrange for painting materials to be delivered to the H for the students when they arrived.

3) How many people showed up? In total, we had 35 people attend this year.

4) What was the highlight of the event?

My favorite part was the during the painting process when I walked around and read all the signatures and pictures the participants left. So cool to see new pieces of history being created right in front of you. Students deserve the opportunity to enjoy that they are a part of the BHSU legacy.

5) How would you like to see the tradition carried on in the future?

I would love for this program to continue and grow. This event is such a wonderful tradition that ties current student’s memories to new students. Each time I hike to the H, a sense of honor feels me. This university is based on what we all have to offer. What makes us unique is what makes us strong as a student body. To be a role model in carrying out such a symbolic and memorable tradition has been amazing. I hope for students to grasp the privilege of the education that receive at BHSU. School spirit is a wonderful trait. Passion will power your dreams. This Hike to the H was my dream because I want more students to love the Black Hills as much as I do.
